Woof Wan-Bau

Director Woof Wan-Bau has teamed up with the Nexus Interactive Arts digital team to create a ‘film based navigational website’ for artist Tacita Dean’s new installation at Tate Modern.

Taking inspiration from Dean’s passion for analogue film making, the immersive website is a journey through a series of cinematic tableaux, each one describing a part of the film making process.

The site content includes over 20 original articles and films especially created for the site with a range of film-makers and artists.

Direction / Production

  • Through Art Direction and Lighting the tableaux form a sympathetic and tactile environment, providing a beautiful synergy between analogue subject matter and digital technology.

  • The film, shot using digital camera system RED, was created scene by scene then composited back together to create the seamless effect.

  • The wide range of props and equipment used in each scene were sourced from london's analogue film groups such as the Cinema Museum in SW1.

Interactive / Content

  • Innovation: The website, developed by digital studio El Mysterioso, uses unique HTML5 techniques to create an edge-to-edge video that acts as an interactive gateway to the content.

  • Content: The majority of the content on the site was especially commissioned for the site from artists and filmmakers. Over 20 articles and 5 unique films.

  • Platforms: Variations of the website can be viewed on iPhone and iPad, allowing the widest accessibility and capitalising on the non-Flash development approach.
